Open Compute Project Japan (OCPJ) was established in 2013 in alignment with the principles of the Open Compute Project. We focus on sharing technical insights into hardware design and operational management for data center facilities. By fostering a global ecosystem for optimized infrastructure, we strive to realize a sustainable society and contribute to end-users.
The Origin Story: Our Founding Principles
Establishment of the Open Compute Project Japan
January 17, 2013 it was decided to share intellectual property on the Open Compute project and open-source based cloud infrastructure technology from several organizations. The Cloud Business Alliance, Agile_Cat, Ltd. Data hotels are a few of the institutes which pushed for the establishment of “Open Compute Project Japan “.
With the spread of cloud computing, and its future expected growth, the trend is a large demand for data centers. The data center, now seen as a social infrastructure, at the same time must enhance its performance. Environmental measures, such as reduction of power consumption and increased efficiency resulting in low costs are required. To achieve the high efficiency and large-scale standardization in this industry, a checklist system of all specifications (server, air conditioning, power, etc.) can be introduced. With all knowledge available and shared, easy construction of efficient data centers can be possible.
The Open Compute Project that Facebook Inc. proposed in April 2011 (OCP), for scaleable computing, also incorporates the design of hardware, such as a servers and storage, in order to make an efficient data center. In order to achieve this, a community of engineers will support the activities of the OCP, as well as do public relations and ensure a significance presence of OCP in the Japanese market. “Open Compute Project Japan” (OCPJ) is responsible for recommendations from Japan.
We are at a major turning point where the service provider and data center owner or manager will take over the lead that hardware vendors had in the past. “Open Compute Project Japan” promotes low-cost, high efficiency eco-systems. We will contribute to this project on a global level.
